Bookkeeping for general contractors and remodelers

Every job is its own business. Your books should show which ones made money, which are behind, and what you are owed.

What Harmony sets up for general contractors and remodelers

Job costing by project

Labor, materials, and subcontractors land on the right job, so your profit is visible before the next bid.

Progress billing and draws

Invoices sent in stages, and money received ahead of the work, are recorded so income is not overstated.

Retainage and change orders

Amounts held back by customers and approved changes are tracked per job, not buried in one total.

Subcontractor payments

Every payment to a sub is tracked through the year so 1099 time is not a scramble.

Overhead you can see

Trucks, tools, insurance, and office costs separated from job costs, so you know what it really costs to run the company.

A remodeler with a dozen small jobs and a general contractor with three large builds need different setups. Harmony reviews the current QuickBooks setup and advises honestly whether it fits or has been outgrown.

A quick example

A $60,000 remodel with 10% retainage. You bill $20,000 at the first draw. The customer pays $18,000 and holds back $2,000. Your books should show $18,000 in cash, $2,000 as retainage you are owed, and the job's costs measured against the full $20,000 billed. Illustration only.

Common questions

Do I need QuickBooks Online Advanced?

Not always. Many contractors do fine on a lower tier. The real questions are whether you need more reports, more users, or finer permissions. That depends on the setup. Harmony reviews it and recommends the right plan.

Can you fix last year's books?

Yes. Cleanups are priced by how many months and how messy. You get a fixed quote after a quick look.
